Heat vs Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets will try to keep their advantage as the home team when they play against the Miami Heat in Game 2 of the 2023 NBA Finals on Sunday night. Denver easily won the first game of the series, with a score of 104-93, shooting over 50% from the field. In the previous three playoff series, Miami had always won the first game, so Game 2 puts them in an unfamiliar situation.

The game will start at 8 p.m. ET in Denver. According to Caesars Sportsbook, the Nuggets are favored to win by 8 points as the home team, and the over/under line is set at 216.5, which is the expected total number of points scored in the game according to Vegas.

Reasons why the Heat could cover the spread: Despite struggling with scoring in Game 1, the Heat showcased their excellent defense. They held the Nuggets to less than 1.12 points per possession, and Denver only made 8 of their 27 attempted 3-point shots. Miami also dominated the rebounding battle, securing almost 83% of available defensive rebounds. Throughout the playoffs, the Heat have been allowing only 111.5 points per 100 possessions, using a versatile defensive approach that includes generating 7.3 steals per game. In the postseason, Miami’s opponents have been shooting just 32.3% from 3-point range. Additionally, the Heat have limited their opponents to 11.5 fast break points and 44.8 points in the paint per game. Looking back at the regular season, Miami was among the top 10 defensive teams in the league, excelling in preventing free throws, creating turnovers, limiting points in the paint, allowing few fast break points, and securing defensive rebounds.

Reasons why the Nuggets could cover the spread: In recent years, the Nuggets have been dominant in their matchups against the Heat, winning and covering the spread in their last seven meetings. With a seven-game winning streak, Denver enters Game 2 with confidence after their 104-93 victory in the series opener. The Nuggets controlled the game from the beginning, leading by nine points after the first quarter, 17 points at halftime, and 21 points at the end of the third quarter. Although the final score seemed close, Denver’s performance was more dominant than it appeared. Nikola Jokic, a two-time MVP, achieved another triple-double with 27 points, 14 assists, and 10 rebounds. On the other hand, Miami struggled to find their rhythm, shooting just over 40% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc. It’s important to note that the Heat have only covered the spread once in their last six games played in June.
